Ratu Meli Saubulinayau, the chairman of the Lau Provincial Council, has expressed concerns over the practice of disowning or banishing individuals involved in drug-related activities, emphasizing that such measures merely displace the issue rather than resolve it. He pointed out that while some villages have opted to expel those caught up in drug use, this strategy ignores the deeper underlying causes of addiction.
“From my end, that is not the solution,” Ratu Meli stated, arguing that simply distancing oneself from a person struggling with addiction only transfers the problem to another community. He advocates for a more holistic and effective response to the issue, highlighting the necessity of treatment, understanding, and support instead of exclusion.
According to Ratu Meli, addressing the root causes is vital, as many individuals turn to drugs due to a lack of emotional support and care from their families and communities. He noted that communities often become preoccupied with financial gain and materialism, which can lead to neglect of familial relationships and responsibilities.
“This is why people are being chased out without the problem actually being solved,” he remarked. Ratu Meli called on communities to embrace a compassionate and constructive approach, focusing on assistance and rehabilitation to effectively combat the cycle of drug abuse. His message serves as a reminder that fostering supportive environments can lead to better outcomes for individuals fighting addiction.
