Exclusive: Jewish-Muslim Power Couple’s Engagement Shocks Society

A new Jewish-Muslim political power couple has announced their engagement.

Alex Soros, 38, a Jewish philanthropist and son of billionaire political donor George Soros, is now engaged to Huma Abedin, 47. Abedin was a top adviser to Hillary Clinton and was previously married to disgraced politician Anthony Weiner.

The couple shared their happiness on Instagram, writing, “We couldn’t be happier, more grateful, or more in love.”

Soros proposed privately at their home in New York in May, followed by a formal celebration in Italy, according to Vogue. The couple met last fall at a mutual friend’s birthday party and made their public debut together at the Met Gala in May.

Alex Soros is known as a prominent donor to liberal causes through his involvement in the Open Society Foundations, an organization founded by his father, George Soros. The senior Soros, often targeted by right-wing critics, is recognized for his philanthropy and commitment to progressive initiatives.

George Soros, 93, has long been a significant figure in liberal philanthropy, naming Alex as his successor to lead the Open Society Foundations. Alex, committed to his Jewish heritage, frequently shares images of holiday celebrations on social media.

Alex established his own foundation in 2012, with its first donation of $250,000 to Bend The Arc, a progressive Jewish organization. He also serves on the boards of the Center for Jewish History in Manhattan and other institutions.

George Soros, born in Hungary in 1930, survived the Holocaust by hiding. Although he identifies as Jewish, he is not active in Jewish institutions and has not made significant contributions to Jewish nonprofits. His net worth is approximately $6.7 billion, with his network of businesses and charities totaling around $25 billion.

Huma Abedin was raised in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, by Muslim parents who managed the Journal of Muslim Minority Affairs, where she also worked. Abedin began her career as an intern for Hillary Clinton and eventually became Clinton’s campaign manager and deputy chief of staff during Clinton’s tenure as secretary of state.

Abedin’s former marriage to Anthony Weiner, who was sentenced to prison in 2017 for sexting a minor, ended in 2016.
