Everton in Danger: Will Relegation Become Reality After Heavy Loss?

Luis Miguel Echegaray and Janusz Michallik discussed whether this year will see Everton relegated following a 4-0 loss to Tottenham Hotspur.

Tottenham secured a decisive victory in the Premier League on Saturday, with goalkeeper Jordan Pickford making a costly mistake and Son Heung-min netting two goals. Yves Bissouma and Cristian Romero also scored, marking Tottenham’s first win of the season as they dominated the match against an Everton side that has yet to score this season and has conceded seven goals in two matches.

In the first half, Pickford mishandled a straightforward back pass, allowing Son to seize the opportunity and score Tottenham’s second goal into an empty net. Everton, missing several key defenders due to injuries, struggled to apply any pressure on the home team. Manager Sean Dyche will be looking for an immediate turnaround when Everton faces Bournemouth next week, a crucial match for the struggling club.

Despite a frustrating season opener where Tottenham let a lead slip against Leicester City, manager Ange Postecoglou saw his team maintain control throughout this match. Tottenham midfielder James Maddison expressed confidence in their performance, stating, “We thoroughly deserved it. We dominated… It’s important you try and put into practice what the manager wants.”

Everton offered minimal attacking threat, particularly outside set-pieces, and Tottenham capitalized on their defensive mistakes. Bissouma opened the scoring with a powerful shot after the ball landed at his feet near the edge of the box. After Pickford’s error, Son scored his first goal, taking advantage of the slip-up.

Following the second goal, Tottenham maintained their control, scoring their third in the 70th minute when Romero headed in from a corner, with Pickford appearing unable to react. Son concluded the scoring after a brilliant run from defender Micky van de Ven set him up for a finish from a challenging angle.
