Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers announced on Thursday that he will not seek re-election in 2024, a decision that opens the door for a competitive race in one of the country’s highly contested battleground states. In a heartfelt video shared on X, Evers, a Democrat aged 73, explained that he aims to dedicate more time to his family, although he expressed confidence in his potential for victory had he chosen to run again.
“For five decades, my family has sacrificed to give me the gift of service. They’re my world, and I owe it to them to focus on doing all the things we enjoy and love doing together,” Evers stated. He underscored his gratitude for his role as governor, calling it “the best job I ever had.” Evers had previously mentioned that he would reveal his decision post reaching a budget agreement with Republicans, which he accomplished earlier this month.
His departure from the race is expected to trigger an array of primaries for both parties. Democrats, including Attorney General Josh Kaul, Lt. Gov. Sara Rodriguez, Secretary of State Sarah Godlewski, and Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley, are among those showing interest in replacing Evers. Former Lt. Gov. Mandela Barnes is also contemplating a bid, stating he will take his time to make an informed decision.
On the Republican side, two candidates have officially entered the race: Josh Schoemann, the Washington County executive, and Bill Berrien, a manufacturing CEO from Milwaukee. Berrien has criticized Evers, claiming he is “too scared to run on the Madison Democrats’ record of failure,” while also asserting his plans for the upcoming campaign. Other potential Republican candidates, such as businessman Eric Hovde and former Governor Scott Walker, have also signaled their interest, hinting at a lively contest ahead.
Evers’ decision is aligned with a growing trend within the Democratic Party to pave the way for new leadership voices, particularly following the dynamics seen in the recent presidential race. Polls indicate considerable support from state Democrats for Evers’ re-election, although there is a split opinion among the broader electorate.
Wisconsin Democratic Party Chair Devin Remiker commended Evers as “one of the most successful governors in our history,” highlighting the importance of his leadership in advancing the state’s progress.
