European Stars Boost Flying Fijians Ahead of England Clash

The depth of talent among Fijian rugby players competing in top European leagues is enhancing the Flying Fijians’ reputation as a Tier One nation, according to head coach Mick Byrne. He expressed enthusiasm over the progression of Fijian athletes performing abroad, emphasizing the high level of competition in leagues such as the English Premiership and French Top League.

Byrne noted, “The players that are playing up north are playing well; they’re improving.” There are approximately nine or ten young players training in academies in Europe who are on the cusp of stepping into the upper echelons of professional rugby. This influx of talent contributes to the healthy competition within the national team, making selection more challenging as Byrne considers who is best suited for the squad.

He acknowledged that not all players will make the cut and that disappointment is inevitable, but he encouraged those who might miss out to stay motivated. “They shouldn’t be losing heart. They should be excited by the development of the team and really want to be a part of it,” he added.

As the Flying Fijians prepare for their upcoming match against England, Byrne called on fans to rally support. He asked supporters in the Northern Hemisphere to bring their flags and create an electrifying atmosphere that feels like home for the players.

Byrne’s comments come in the wake of an exciting period for Fijian rugby, building on the successful integration of talents from the Swire Shipping Fijian Drua alongside established players in the squad. This blend of youth and experience positions the team to perform strongly on the international stage and suggests a promising future for Fijian rugby as they aim to maintain and enhance their standing. The hopeful outlook and commitment to developing talent within the sport signal uplifting times ahead for the Flying Fijians and their dedicated fanbase.
