Lamecha Girma, the Ethiopian world record-holder, was hospitalized following a serious fall during the final lap of the Olympic 3000m steeplechase final in Paris. The incident occurred as he approached the last barrier, resulting in a dramatic crash that left him motionless on the ground for several moments before medical personnel arrived.
While Soufiane El Bakkali secured the gold medal ahead of Kenneth Rooks, Girma’s condition caused concern among spectators and fellow athletes. Medical staff quickly placed him in a brace as he was transported off the track on a stretcher.
Initial fears for Girma’s health persisted for about an hour, but reassuring reports later confirmed that he was conscious and responding positively to treatment at the hospital. His management agency issued a statement, revealing that after thorough medical evaluations, it was determined that he did not suffer any significant head injuries. Though he will undergo additional scans to assess his leg, he is expected to be released from the hospital soon. The agency also expressed gratitude towards the French medical team and supporters.
At 23 years old, Girma holds the steeplechase world record with a time of 7:52.11, achieved in Paris last year. He also broke the long-standing world indoor record for the 3000m with a time of 7:23.81. Despite his impressive records, he is still in pursuit of his first major championship gold, having finished as a runner-up in various world championships and the Olympics.
During the race, Girma was well-positioned as he approached the final lap. He appeared to increase his speed towards the last hurdle, a common strategy among steeplechasers. However, he miscalculated his jump, leading to a collision with the barrier that sent him tumbling to the track.
