ESPN has teamed up with Words + Pictures to produce “Saban,” a six-episode documentary series currently in production that will delve into the life and legacy of legendary former Alabama head coach Nick Saban. More details regarding the premiere and rollout of episodes will be shared at a later date, but ESPN has released a teaser trailer to set the anticipation.
Directed by Russell Dinallo, the series aims to capture the essence of Saban’s impressive career, particularly highlighting his 17 years with the Alabama Crimson Tide, during which he secured six National Championship titles. Reflecting on the journey, Saban expressed, “With my coaching days behind me, Ms. Terry and I have been doing a lot of reflection and realized we were ready to tell our story. The team at Words + Pictures has encouraged me to really look back not just at my time at Alabama, but every stop along the way.”
This documentary will feature hundreds of hours of exclusive footage from locker rooms and practice fields, alongside numerous behind-the-scenes glimpses through Saban’s career that spans his time at Alabama, LSU, the Miami Dolphins, and Michigan State. The series will incorporate over 30 hours of interviews with Saban himself, in addition to more than 80 discussions featuring Ms. Terry, former players, assistant coaches, rivals, family members, friends, and respected observers within the football community.
Connor Schell, CEO of Words + Pictures, praised Saban, stating, “There will never be another Nick Saban. He’s a football genius, a singular leader, and a true icon who has done more than anyone to shape the modern game of college football.” Schell noted the meticulous nature of Saban’s coaching, emphasizing that attention to detail has contributed significantly to his incredible legacy.
Having been hired by the University of Alabama in 2007, Saban transformed the Crimson Tide program into a powerhouse, leading them to six National Championships, with victories in 2009, 2011, 2012, 2015, 2017, and 2020. His impact in the football realm is further highlighted by the fact that he oversaw the program’s first four Heisman Trophy winners and had a record of 292-71-1 by the time of his retirement on January 10, 2024, with 201 wins amassed at Alabama alone. Known for his recruiting expertise, Saban maintained a streak of 16 consecutive seasons with a top-five recruiting class, contributing to the development of 47 first-round NFL draft picks from players he coached.
