ESPN has officially announced the details of its long-anticipated flagship streaming service, simply named ESPN, set to debut this fall. This name choice underscores the strength and trust associated with the brand, as noted by network chairman James Pitaro during a press event.
The ESPN streaming platform will offer two subscription plans. The unlimited plan is priced at $29.99 monthly (or $45.99 in a bundle with Disney+ and Hulu), providing users access to a wealth of content, including ESPN Channels 2 and 3, ESPNU, ESPN Deportes, and a variety of college sports channels, totaling approximately 47,000 live events and studio shows annually. An alternative “select” plan will be available for $11.99 per month, offering all content currently found on ESPN+.
Disney has been proactive in promoting the streamer, which aims to enhance the viewing experience for sports enthusiasts. CEO Bob Iger previously described the platform as user-friendly due to its app-based design.
As Disney grapples with subscriber numbers amid a trend of cord-cutting affecting linear networks, live sports remain a significant draw for viewers. This resilience has led Disney to invest heavily in retaining broadcasting rights, particularly for the NBA, amid fierce competition from established streaming giants.
Despite a dip in operating income attributed to increased costs from expanded sports coverage, ESPN’s revenue rose 5% to $4.53 billion, thanks in part to a boost in domestic advertising revenue.
In a strategic move to facilitate a seamless launch, current ESPN subscribers will automatically gain access to the new streaming service. The announcement comes shortly after the unsuccessful attempt to launch Venu Sports, a joint venture streaming platform among major companies, including Disney, which signals a shift toward solo streaming strategies amidst a competitive landscape.
Disney’s commitment to its sports streaming platform poses exciting potential for sports fans, ensuring enhanced access to live events and programming moving forward. This launch could help solidify ESPN’s position within the dynamic streaming market.
