ESPN Shakes Up NFL Coverage: Who’s Out and What’s Next?

ESPN has reportedly terminated the contracts of football analyst Robert Griffin III and host Samantha Ponder, as detailed in a report from The Athletic.

Griffin, a former NFL quarterback and Heisman Trophy winner from Baylor, joined the network in 2021, focusing on college football and NFL analysis. He became a part of “Monday Night Countdown” during the 2022 season and made appearances on various network shows.

The Athletic’s report indicates that Griffin had two years left on his contract, and his substantial annual salary will still be honored. This offseason, he was succeeded on “Monday Night Countdown” by former Philadelphia Eagles center Jason Kelce.

At age 34, Griffin had an eight-season NFL career with the Washington Football Team, Cleveland Browns, and Baltimore Ravens after being selected second overall in the 2012 NFL Draft. His rookie season was his most impressive, earning him the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year title and helping Washington reach the playoffs. Over his career, he posted a starting record of 16-26, with 9,271 passing yards, 43 touchdowns, and 1,809 rushing yards with 10 touchdowns.

In response to the news, Griffin shared a video on X, formerly known as Twitter, and later posted a statement that acknowledged his departure. He expressed gratitude for the supportive colleagues he had at ESPN, recognizing both on-air talent and behind-the-scenes personnel.

Samantha Ponder, who hosted “Sunday NFL Countdown,” was also reported to be among those let go. Their departures are believed to be part of annual budget evaluations at Disney, ESPN’s parent company, as it approaches the end of its fiscal year.

Ponder joined ESPN in 2011 and has held several roles, including reporter for “Saturday Night Football” and contributor to “College GameDay.” Current speculation suggests potential replacements for her on “Sunday NFL Countdown” may include Laura Rutledge, host of “NFL Live,” and Mike Greenberg, host of “Get Up.”
