ESPN and Fox One Spark Early Streaming Momentum With Million-Plus Signups in First Month

The recently launched standalone streaming services from ESPN and Fox One have made impressive strides in subscriber acquisition, with ESPN amassing approximately 2.1 million sign-ups and Fox One securing around 1.1 million in their first month, as reported by Antenna. The services debuted on August 21, offering subscribers comprehensive access to a variety of branded content, including live sports, at monthly rates of $29.99 and $19.99, respectively. For those interested in both services, a bundled subscription is available for $39.99.

Antenna clarified that these numbers do not account for existing Disney subscribers who switched plans or those who signed up through partnerships with traditional multichannel video programming distributors. The commencement of the National Football League and college football seasons typically drives a surge in subscriber sign-ups on weekends, and Fox One experienced a notable increase around the Super Bowl rematch between the Philadelphia Eagles and Kansas City Chiefs on September 14.

The statistics reveal that approximately 57% of ESPN subscribers have chosen the new flagship Unlimited service, while 43% opted for the ESPN Select (previously known as ESPN+). Additionally, 63% of ESPN’s new subscribers from August 21 to September 30 have taken advantage of bundled offerings, which include Disney+ and Hulu, providing a range of ad-free and ad-supported options.

Antenna emphasized that the early momentum observed in the initial days post-launch appears to be sustaining, suggesting positive growth for both streaming platforms as they cater to the demands of sports fans. This trend is indicative of a broader shift towards streaming, highlighting how viewers are increasingly gravitating towards flexible and diverse content delivery methods.
