MILWAUKEE — Erin Jackson clinched her spot for the Milan Cortina Winter Games by winning the women’s 1,000 meters at the U.S. Olympic trials for long track speedskating on Saturday. She outpaced her close friend and world record-holder, Brittany Bowe, finishing the race in 1 minute, 14.63 seconds—0.38 seconds faster than Bowe. This victory marks another milestone for Jackson, who is set to defend her gold medal in the 500 meters at the upcoming Olympics.
Four years ago at the same venue, the Pettit National Ice Center, Jackson faced disappointment when she slipped during the 500 meters and failed to qualify. Bowe, who succeeded in securing her spot in that event, heroically offered her place to Jackson, who ultimately went on to make history in Beijing by becoming the first Black woman to win an individual gold medal at a Winter Olympics.
Jackson’s remarkable performance on Saturday is even more noteworthy considering her recent struggle with a torn left hamstring sustained just before a World Cup meet in December. “It’s just a really big relief. Just a few days ago, I wasn’t sure I was going to be able to race at all,” said the 33-year-old athlete. She expressed relief at being able to race without any hamstring pain during the trial.
As for Bowe, who turns 38 next month, she will also represent the U.S. in the 1,000 meters after securing a berth. This will be her fourth Olympic appearance, and she has announced it will be her last. Bowe claimed a bronze medal in the 1,000 meters in Beijing and also shared in the team pursuit bronze at the 2018 Pyeongchang Games.
In addition to the women’s event, Jordan Stolz is expected to secure his second Olympic trip by competing in the men’s 1,000 meters later on Saturday. The U.S. trials will conclude on Monday.
This juxtaposition of triumphs and challenges among these athletes reflects the resilience in competitive sports, as Jackson and Bowe continue to inspire with their dedication and friendship. The upcoming Winter Games promise to be a showcase of remarkable talent and perseverance.
