The U.S. Department of Transportation has initiated an investigation into approximately 150,000 Ram trucks and Jeep SUVs due to reported sudden engine stalls that frequently prevent the vehicles from restarting. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) highlighted that 2022 RAM 1500 pickup trucks and 2022 Jeep Wagoneer SUVs are particularly affected, with issues tied to electrical problems that cause the engine to abruptly lose power.

The Office of Defects Investigation received around 80 consumer complaints regarding these vehicle malfunctions, specifically pertaining to those equipped with the Fiat Chrysler Automotive Group LLC’s (FCA) 5.7L Hemi eTorque hybrid engines. Many complaints indicate that the engine may shut off unexpectedly while driving at low speeds, sometimes leading the vehicle to automatically shift into park and engage the emergency brake.

Fortunately, no injuries have been reported in connection with this engine malfunction. The NHTSA has commenced a preliminary investigation, which may potentially lead to a recall. Stellantis has expressed its commitment to fully cooperate with the investigation.

This development comes amid ongoing challenges for Stellantis, as sales figures for its brands—including Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, and Ram—showed a decline in the second quarter. Earlier this month, a separate recall investigation was launched involving 94,000 Jeep Wranglers, and in June, the company faced the need to recall over 1 million vehicles in North America due to a software issue that raised safety concerns.

A summary of this situation illustrates the importance of regulatory vigilance and consumer safety. The investigation reflects a proactive approach to identifying and addressing potential automotive safety issues before they lead to serious incidents. It also highlights Stellantis’ readiness to work through challenges and take responsibility for the satisfaction and safety of its customers.

This investigation could ultimately serve as a catalyst for improvements in both technology and consumer trust for Stellantis as it navigates these challenges. With continued cooperation and remedy efforts, the company can improve its vehicle reliability, which might foster a renewed confidence among consumers moving forward.
