On the app, users can share their experiences with local men, indicating whether they believe a man is a “red flag” or a “green flag” and leaving comments that can range from cautionary tales to positive endorsements. The app includes features such as background checks and photo verification to prevent deceitful behavior, which resonates with its mission of enhancing women’s safety.
Sean Cook, the app’s founder, created Tea after witnessing challenges faced by women in online dating, including experiences of being catfished or dating individuals with questionable backgrounds. While intended to empower women by providing a platform for sharing warning signs, the app has also attracted criticism from some men who express concerns over potential misrepresentation.
Similar initiatives have gained traction in online community spaces, with groups aimed at alerting women about problematic partners; however, these platforms have been criticized for leading to gossip and spreading misinformation.
