Seniors in Robbinsdale School District Register to Vote
Tuesday marked National Voter Registration Day, and a local initiative focused on engaging the next generation of voters.
In Robbinsdale Area Schools, booths set up in the cafeterias of Cooper and Armstrong High Schools aimed to inform students about their voting options. At Armstrong High School, volunteer Nancy Intermill attracted students’ attention with a booth adorned with stickers and snacks.
As students visited the booth, Intermill inquired whether they were registered to vote. Students aged 16 and older are eligible to pre-register, while those 18 and above can register on-site.
“It’s important for them to know that there are opportunities available if they stay informed about what’s happening,” Intermill emphasized.
Intermill serves as the voter services chair for the League of Women Voters of Crystal-New Hope-East Plymouth-Robbinsdale, a nonpartisan organization dedicated to increasing voter participation.
“When individuals are registered, it fosters a mindset of civic engagement,” she added. “That’s what democracy is all about.”
A New Generation of Voters
Among the enthusiastic students at Armstrong is Ari White, who recently turned 18.
“I’m really excited. I’ve been researching both of our candidates,” Ari shared.
Ari highlighted the importance of voting, a value instilled by her parents, and expressed a desire for her peers to register as well.
“Voting is a privilege and a fundamental right we have in America,” she said. “In many places around the world, people do not have the opportunity to influence their communities and their countries.”
Robbinsdale Superintendent Teri Staloch also attended the event and expressed her excitement about the students’ engagement at the booth.
“We want to empower them to understand that their voices matter,” Staloch stated.
Additionally, the district took part in a live virtual event hosted by the Minnesota Secretary of State. Students from Robbinsdale Academy-Highview and Robbinsdale Virtual Academy were also able to participate.
In Minnesota, voters can register on the same day as the election. For details about voting, registration, and polling locations, residents can visit the Secretary of State’s website.
