Consumers Energy is making strides in expanding renewable energy access for Michiganders with their innovative “Green Giving” program. Launched earlier this year, the initiative allows income-qualified customers to benefit from sustainable energy sources, promoting both economic and environmental advantages.

The program is designed to support those who might struggle to pay for renewable energy options. By leveraging community-sponsored funds, Consumers Energy enables low-income participants to subscribe to renewable energy resources, which will not only generate clean electricity but also return financial benefits directly to these customers. Participants can expect bill credits ranging from $10 to $20 each month.

Lauren Snyder, the senior vice president at Consumers Energy, emphasized the transformative nature of “Green Giving,” highlighting that it empowers vulnerable customers by providing them access to affordable, sustainable energy solutions. The initiative aims to make Michigan’s energy landscape more inclusive, ensuring that everyone can contribute to the state’s renewable energy future.

So far, over 2,828 customers have joined the program, with nearly 12% from environmental justice communities that face significant energy challenges. This effort aligns with Consumers Energy’s commitment to expanding participation in renewable projects, aiming to increase eligibility to serve even more residents in the future.

To date, the initiatives connected to “Green Giving” are projected to generate 7,739 MWh of clean energy. This substantial amount translates into impressive environmental benefits, such as the equivalent of charging over 320 million smartphones and recycling nearly 1,590 tons of waste instead of sending it to landfills.

Consumers Energy aims to make energy savings and sustainability accessible to all Michiganders. Interested customers can explore additional offerings through the company’s My Personalized Offerings tool at consumersenergy.com/myoffer.

As Michigan continues to advance its renewable energy goals, initiatives like “Green Giving” showcase how community collaboration can create a greener and more economically friendly energy future for everyone.
