Cortly Witherspoon serves as the community schools liaison at Winfield Elementary School in Baltimore County, where he is dedicated to supporting families and fostering engagement in education. Witherspoon, a seasoned social and political activist, has recently become an active member of the Education Support Professionals of Baltimore County (ESPBC) and is enrolled in the Maryland State Education Association’s (MSEA) 2024-2025 Minority Leadership Training program.
In his role as the CARE (Caregiver, Assistance, Resource, and Engagement) liaison, Witherspoon applies a lifetime of humanitarian principles. He collaborates closely with the community school coordinator to empower families and caregivers, aiming to enhance their involvement in their children’s education and decision-making processes. His work is grounded in providing resources and support, helping families access food, school supplies, uniforms, and household necessities through the Community Resource Cottage.
Having joined the organization two years ago, Witherspoon quickly found his place within the union, inspired by a longstanding respect for its mission and values. He previously had experience with student activism, notably with the NAACP during his middle school years, and has held leadership roles including president of the Baltimore City Southern Christian Leadership Conference, where he advocated for a $15 minimum wage.
This past summer, Witherspoon collaborated with ESP Summer Organizers, promoting the ESP Bill of Rights and engaging with potential members. His participation in the 2024 MSEA Summer Leadership Conference further expanded his network, connecting him with passionate union members and educators.
Now, he is actively involved in ESPBC’s racial, social, and economic justice initiatives and is focused on enhancing his understanding of related issues within public education and union dynamics. Outside of work, Witherspoon is a dedicated foster parent, embodying his belief that service is essential to our existence. He remains committed to community service, advocating for justice, supporting the union, and preparing future generations for impactful contributions.
