September 17 marks National Voter Registration Day, a nonpartisan civic holiday that emphasizes the importance of democracy and encourages Americans to register to vote ahead of the general election on November 5.
This holiday serves as a timely reminder for U.S. citizens to verify their voter registration status, stay informed about electoral details, and prepare for absentee voting, which kicks off on September 20. Comprehensive information is accessible on the Hennepin County Elections website.
Members of the League of Women Voters of Minnetonka, Eden Prairie, and Hopkins (LWV MEPH) were present at Hennepin Technical College in Eden Prairie on National Voter Registration Day to provide information and assist students and staff in registering to vote.
The League of Women Voters is a nonpartisan organization that promotes active participation in government, seeks to deepen understanding of significant public policy issues, and advocates for change through education and activism.
Several students from Hennepin Technical College, including Idman Noor, visited the LWV information table during lunchtime on September 17. Noor expressed excitement about voting in her first general election this year.
Sharon Borine, the president of LWV MEPH, emphasized the importance of empowering voters like Noor. “We are here for democracy,” she stated. “We advocate for rights for all Americans and the power that each individual can wield through voting.”
She added, “Regardless of who you are, voting is the most impactful way to make a difference.”
LWV MEPH plans to hold more voter registration events in the coming weeks at local libraries, schools, and businesses. Their next event is scheduled for Saturday, September 21, at Lush Cosmetics in Ridgedale Center, Minnetonka.
Borine also highlighted that the organization recently hosted four candidate forums, including sessions for the Eden Prairie City Council, school board, Hennepin County Commissioner District 6, and Minnesota House Districts 49A and 49B.
Despite its name, the League of Women Voters welcomes individuals of all genders, with men comprising about 20% of its membership. Borine noted their commitment to nonpartisanship, stating, “Many of us have been members of different political parties, and we embrace everyone without inquiring about their political affiliations.”
For those interested in learning more about LWV MEPH and attending future events, additional information can be found on their website.
