Empowering Communities: Cortly Witherspoon’s Mission at Winfield Elementary

Cortly Witherspoon serves as the community school liaison at Winfield Elementary School in Baltimore County, where he brings a wealth of experience as a social and political activist. Currently a member of the Education Support Professionals of Baltimore County (ESPBC) and participating in the Maryland State Education Association’s (MSEA) 2024-2025 Minority Leadership Training cohort, Witherspoon is focused on leadership development within the educational community.

In his role as the CARE (Caregiver, Assistance, Resource, and Engagement) liaison, Witherspoon applies the guiding principles of humanity to foster engagement among families and caregivers within the community school environment. Collaborating closely with the community school coordinator, he aims to empower caregivers, promote shared decision-making regarding student success, and facilitate support for students’ learning experiences.

Witherspoon operates from the Community Resource Cottage, where essential items like food, school supplies, uniforms, and household necessities are provided. The Cottage also serves as a hub for connecting families with additional community services to enhance their overall well-being.

Since starting his position two years ago, Witherspoon quickly immersed himself in the union landscape, finding his building representative within the first week. Although new to union membership, his prior collaborations with unions and respect for their values motivated him to engage actively within his local union.

A background in social and political activism has shaped Witherspoon’s journey, starting with student advocacy during his middle school years with the NAACP. He has also held significant roles, such as president of the Baltimore City Southern Christian Leadership Conference, where he advocated for a $15 minimum wage.

This past summer, Witherspoon worked with ESP Summer Organizers to promote the ESP Bill of Rights and connected with potential members. His efforts allowed him to engage with fellow CARE liaisons and other educational professionals dedicated to workplace respect and dignity. He further expanded his network at the 2024 MSEA Summer Leadership Conference, enriching his understanding of union processes through workshops led by seasoned members.

Now, as part of the ESPBC’s initiative addressing racial, social, and economic justice issues, Witherspoon is enhancing his knowledge through the Minority Leadership Training cohort. His personal commitment to community service is reflected in his role as a foster parent.

Witherspoon embodies the belief that serving others is a fundamental responsibility, dedicating his life to advocacy, union support, and preparing future generations to make a positive impact in their communities.
