Empowering Communities: Cortly Witherspoon’s Mission at Winfield Elementary

Cortly Witherspoon is a community school liaison at Winfield Elementary School in Baltimore County, where he plays a crucial role in supporting families and caregivers. With a background as a social and political activist, Witherspoon is also involved in the Education Support Professionals of Baltimore County (ESPBC) and participates in the Maryland State Education Association’s (MSEA) Minority Leadership Training for 2024-2025.

In his role as a CARE (Caregiver, Assistance, Resource, and Engagement) liaison, Witherspoon collaborates with the community school coordinator to encourage family engagement and promote shared decision-making about student success. His office, the Community Resource Cottage, provides essential supplies like food, school materials, and uniforms, while also connecting families with additional community services to enhance their overall quality of life.

Since starting his position two years ago, Witherspoon has actively engaged with the union, quickly finding a local representative and advocating for values he deeply respects. His dedication to social and political activism began in middle school, where he worked with the NAACP to improve the African American experience. He later served as the president of the Baltimore City Southern Christian Leadership Conference, advocating for a $15 minimum wage.

Recently, Witherspoon collaborated with ESP Summer Organizers to promote the ESP Bill of Rights and connect with potential union members. His participation in the 2024 MSEA Summer Leadership Conference enriched his understanding of union dynamics as he networked with fellow educators.

Currently, he is involved in efforts addressing racial, social, and economic justice (RSEJ) issues and is committed to furthering his knowledge in this area through the MSEA Minority Leadership Training program. Additionally, Witherspoon is a foster parent, embodying his belief that service is essential to community living. He remains dedicated to justice, union support, and nurturing the next generation to make meaningful contributions to society.
