Empowering Choices: The Impact of Cash Payments on Job Seekers

Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, has backed the largest basic income study in the United States to date through his nonprofit organization, OpenResearch. The initiative provided unconditional cash payments to individuals living below the poverty line for a duration of three years.

The study involved around 3,000 participants aged between 21 and 40 from Texas and Illinois, all earning less than $30,000 annually. Among them, one-third received $1,000 per month, while the remaining participants, serving as the control group, received only $50.

Findings from the study revealed that those receiving the larger payments had greater flexibility in seeking employment that aligned with their interests and aspirations. The research indicated that cash payments could enhance individuals’ ability to make employment choices that suit their unique circumstances and goals. Recipients were found to be actively looking for jobs, but tended to be more selective about the opportunities they pursued.

One participant noted that the cash transfer allowed them to save and be more discerning in their job search. They stated, “I don’t have to take a crappy job just because I need income right now. I have the opportunity to hold out and try and find the right fit.” Another recipient mentioned that they were able to take a lower-paid entry-level job in their desired field, which eventually led to a six-figure salary within two years. They expressed that without the cash transfers, accepting that pay cut would not have been feasible.

The study results showed no significant difference in employment rates between the group receiving larger payments and the control participants. Recipients primarily used the funds to cover essential living expenses such as food, housing, and transportation. The payments also facilitated healthcare needs like dental work and treatment for alcoholism. Although the initial cash support reduced stress levels, many health benefits diminished after two years.

Altman has been a vocal advocate for universal basic income as artificial intelligence transforms the job market and displaces certain positions.
