Empowering Change: Meet the Champion of Community Engagement in Education

Cortly Witherspoon serves as the community schools liaison at Winfield Elementary School in Baltimore County, where he integrates his lifelong values of humanity into his role as CARE (Caregiver, Assistance, Resource, and Engagement) liaison. With a strong background in social and political activism, he is also an active member of the Education Support Professionals of Baltimore County (ESPBC) and is participating in the Maryland State Education Association’s (MSEA) 2024-2025 Minority Leadership Training cohort.

At Winfield Elementary, Witherspoon collaborates with the community school coordinator to engage families and caregivers, fostering their involvement in their children’s education. His efforts aim to empower caregivers, enabling them to contribute meaningfully to their children’s academic journeys and well-being.

Working from the Community Resource Cottage, Witherspoon helps supply essential items such as food, school supplies, uniforms, and household goods. He also assists families in accessing local services that enhance their quality of life.

Witherspoon’s commitment to union activism began shortly after he started his current role two years ago when he sought out his building representative to join the union despite not being a prior member. His history of social advocacy dates back to his middle school days, during which he collaborated with the NAACP on initiatives supporting the African American community. Recently, he held the presidency of the Baltimore City Southern Christian Leadership Conference, advocating for economic justice, specifically a $15 minimum wage.

This past summer, he engaged with the ESP Summer Organizers to promote the ESP Bill of Rights, connecting with fellow professionals and advocating for fair treatment in the workplace. He also participated in the 2024 MSEA Summer Leadership Conference, where he gained insights from experienced union members, fostering relationships within the education community.

Currently, Witherspoon is involved in the ESPBC’s initiatives addressing racial, social, and economic justice issues while furthering his education through the MSEA Minority Leadership Training. Additionally, he is a foster parent, underscoring his dedication to community service.

Witherspoon embodies the belief that service is essential, dedicating himself to social justice, union support, and nurturing the next generation to impact their communities positively.
