As the new academic year commences, parents are being reminded that preparing children for school extends beyond physical items like uniforms and school supplies; it also encompasses emotional and mental readiness at home. Sashi Kiran, the Minister for Women, Children and Social Protection, emphasized the importance of ensuring that children are emotionally prepared for the challenges they may face at school.
Kiran pointed out that while many parents focus on the physical aspects of school preparation, the emotional wellbeing of children is equally crucial. Children are particularly vulnerable to peer pressure, and without the proper guidance, they can easily fall into detrimental behaviors. Therefore, it is essential for parents to instill strong values at home, enabling children to differentiate between right and wrong as they step into the school environment.
She urged parents to carve out time to engage with their children after school, despite the demands of work and daily life. This engagement is vital for observing and understanding children’s emotions and behaviors, which can help parents notice early signs of bullying or emotional distress—issues that children often find difficult to articulate.
“If they’re getting bullied, it’s something that parents need to be able to pick up and ensure that children get the right emotional and mental support,” Kiran stated. Acknowledging the challenges parents face, she noted that while adults have numerous resources for support, children rely heavily on adults for guidance and protection.
Furthermore, Kiran expressed concerns regarding the increasing dependency of children on gadgets for entertainment and distraction, reinforcing the need for parental involvement in their lives. She called for a collaborative effort among parents, teachers, and communities to foster a positive and supportive school environment. Kiran also highlighted the impact of fear-based messaging, like warning children about punitive measures from teachers, which can instill anxiety and hinder their school experience.
Through a united approach, there is hope for creating a nurturing atmosphere where children can thrive emotionally and socially at school, setting a foundation for their future development.
