Veveni Lasaqa, a promising flanker from Vanua Levu, recently made a heartfelt return to his hometown of Natabua after a 14-year absence. Last Friday, he surprised his grandmother, Emele Lasaqa, who had raised him, during an emotional reunion. The 23-year-old has made significant strides in his rugby career, having been selected as one of four Fijians in the Highlanders squad for the 2026 Super Rugby season.
Lasaqa’s journey began in Fiji, where he first played rugby, nurtured by his grandmother’s unwavering support. His father, Viliame Lasaqa, moved to New Zealand seeking better opportunities and left young Veveni in Emele’s care. After completing his primary education in Natabua, he furthered his studies at Tauranga Boys’ College in New Zealand, where his passion for rugby flourished.
Reflecting on his first year with the Highlanders, Lasaqa expressed his gratitude for the opportunity, stating, “It was my first year playing for rugby, and it was really great. Hopefully, the next two years will be better.” He emphasized his current focus on building individual confidence and applying it in upcoming competitions.
One of the highlights of the 2026 season will be the Highlanders’ match against the Fijian Drua in Ba’s new 4R Stadium on May 2. Lasaqa communicated enthusiasm for the game, acknowledging the challenges posed by the heat, especially coming from New Zealand’s cooler climate. “It’s going to be a tough one… Hopefully the boys just stick to the plan and come out with a win,” he shared.
