Detroit rapper Eminem made a notable appearance in his hometown on Tuesday, supporting Vice President Kamala Harris’ presidential campaign at a rally and introducing former President Barack Obama to the crowd.
“Detroit and the entire state of Michigan are incredibly important to me. As we approach this election, our city finds itself in the spotlight more than ever,” Eminem stated, known for his criticism of former President Donald Trump. He urged attendees to make their voices heard and emphasized the importance of voting, stating, “Don’t fear consequences for sharing your opinions.” He expressed his belief that Harris advocates for a future where freedoms are safeguarded.
Following Eminem’s remarks, Obama took the stage, setting the tone with a nod to Eminem’s hit “Lose Yourself.” The former president humorously referenced the song’s lyrics, creating a light-hearted atmosphere as he engaged with the audience.
The event, which took place just days before the start of early voting in Michigan, aimed to energize Democratic voters. Alongside Eminem and Obama, former NFL player Calvin Johnson participated in the rally. Voter turnout in Detroit, a critical area for Democrats, will play a significant role in the upcoming election, particularly in this key swing state alongside Senate candidate Elissa Slotkin.
During his speech, Obama criticized Trump, pointing to recent events where Trump prioritized entertainment over addressing voter concerns. “If your grandpa acted like this, you’d be worried,” Obama remarked, warning against giving Trump unchecked power. He articulated that America is ready for a change.
Trump, who previously held a rally in Detroit with local rapper Trick Trick, had his comments about the city challenged by Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer. She rebuffed Trump’s dismissive remarks about Detroit, asserting he lacks understanding of the city and its vitality. “He ought to keep Detroit out of his mouth,” she concluded.
