A vibrant gathering of music enthusiasts from across the globe assembled at Graceland early Wednesday morning to commemorate the 90th birthday of Elvis Presley. This event, held on January 8th, celebrates the legacy of the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll, who was born in Tupelo, Mississippi in 1935. The annual birthday celebrations kicked off on Monday and will continue throughout the week at Graceland in Memphis.
Despite chilly temperatures in the 20s, approximately 3,000 devoted fans came together for the festivities, which included the reading of official proclamations from the city and county in honor of Presley, a ceremonial cake cutting, and a lively sing-along of “Happy Birthday.” The event was hosted by Elvis Radio DJ Argo, who humorously remarked on the contrast in weather conditions from Elvis’ birth date.
Key speakers included Jack Soden, CEO of Elvis Presley Enterprises, and Kevin Kane, head of Memphis Tourism. Kane emphasized Presley’s unique ability to draw large crowds, even at the age of 90. Joel Weinshanker, managing partner of Elvis Presley Enterprises, expressed gratitude to international fans, especially those arriving from the United Kingdom, where a new immersive Elvis show is set to launch in May.
Looking ahead, Weinshanker mentioned preparations for the 50th anniversary of Presley’s passing in 2027, foreshadowing exciting new projects involving film and documentaries that will showcase innovative technology. He also noted that Riley Keough, Presley’s granddaughter, is heavily involved in future events, despite her absence from this celebration.
Memphis Mayor Paul Young and Shelby County Mayor Lee Harris also took part in the celebration. Young acknowledged Elvis as a symbol of the city’s spirit, while Harris expressed confidence that Presley’s music will endure for generations to come. The event concluded with the mayors reading a joint proclamation commemorating Elvis’ contributions to music and culture.
Fans then continued the celebrations at the Elvis Presley’s Memphis complex, where they enjoyed cake and coffee before attending the grand opening of the “90 for 90” exhibit. This exhibit showcases carefully selected artifacts from Presley’s extensive collection, offering a glimpse into pivotal moments in his career and personal life. The exhibit will be available for viewing until December.
This heartfelt tribute reminds us that Elvis Presley’s influence continues to inspire and connect people, showcasing the timeless nature of his artistry. As fans gather to celebrate these milestones, it highlights not just a legacy of music, but a community of individuals brought together by a shared love for the King.
