Elton John recently opened up about his difficulties in watching his new musical, “The Devil Wears Prada,” due to vision challenges stemming from a severe eye infection. Speaking at the musical’s opening night at the Dominion Theatre in London—an event that also served as a charity gala for the Elton John AIDS Foundation—John revealed that his eyesight had deteriorated, making it hard for him to view the performance.
“I haven’t been able to come to many of the previews because I’ve lost my eyesight, so it’s hard for me to see it,” John shared with the audience. Despite these challenges, he expressed joy in being able to experience the musical through sound, noting, “But I love to hear it and it quite sounded good tonight.”
The 77-year-old legend previously disclosed that he has been dealing with limited vision in one eye since September due to a “severe eye infection.” While he mentioned that healing is underway, he acknowledged that complete recovery will take time. In a recent interview on “Good Morning America,” he expressed cautious optimism, stating there is “hope and encouragement” for his recovery, even while admitting, “I can’t see anything, I can’t read anything, I can’t watch anything.”
Although Elton John retired from touring in 2023, he still contributed to the arts by composing the score for “The Devil Wears Prada,” a stage adaptation of the iconic 2006 film. Additionally, he is set to release a documentary titled “Elton John: Never Too Late” on December 13. Earlier this year, Elise achieved EGOT status after winning an Emmy for outstanding variety special, cementing his legacy as one of the most celebrated artists in entertainment.
While these health struggles are undoubtedly arduous, John’s dedication to music and resilience in the face of adversity inspire fans around the world. His work continues to flourish, illustrating that passion doesn’t wane even during challenging times.
In summary, Elton John’s vision issues have made it difficult for him to fully engage with his new musical, yet his ongoing commitment to his artistry and optimistic outlook about recovery serve as a testament to his enduring spirit.
