Valencia CF and Sporting de Gijón share a rich tradition in Spanish football, having both experienced the elite division for decades, boasting two of the oldest stadiums in the country, and producing notable players over the years. One such former player, Eloy Olaya, recently visited the Valencia CF squad at their hotel in Asturias ahead of an important match.

Eloy Olaya is celebrated as one of the iconic figures from Valencia’s early 1990s period and remains a beloved emblem for fans of that generation. The Gijón native played for Valencia CF for seven seasons (1988-1989 to 1994-1995), during which time he made 311 appearances, scored an impressive 69 goals, and provided 35 assists. He is regarded as one of the most prominent Asturians to don the Valencia jersey, joining the ranks of other local legends like Paquito and Pepe Carrete. Prior to his notable stint at Valencia, Olaya was an integral part of the Real Sporting team from 1979 to 1988.

During his visit, Olaya expressed his joy at witnessing Valencia CF’s presence in Gijón again, reflecting on the close relationship between the two clubs. “I am very happy to see Valencia CF here for another matchup. In a few years, we have had three eliminations between the two teams, and we are full of anticipation,” he stated. He emphasized the special bond the club has with Gijón, attributing it to the many Asturians who have played for Valencia CF. “There has always been a strong connection. All of us who have played for Valencia CF hold great memories. We have a tremendous affection for the city and its fans,” he added.

Olaya took the opportunity to reconnect with Voro González, with whom he shared the pitch for five seasons, and chatted with Diego López, another Asturian who has significant ties to Valencia CF since his debut in the first team. This sense of nostalgia and kinship is a testament to the enduring legacy of players like Olaya and the lasting relationships formed in the sport.
