Tesla CEO Elon Musk expressed his distress over his estranged transgender daughter, claiming that she was “killed” after receiving gender-affirming care. During an interview with psychologist and conservative commentator Jordan Peterson, Musk stated he is committed to combating what he referred to as the “woke mind virus.”
Musk characterized gender-reassignment surgery as “child mutilation and sterilization.” His daughter, Vivian Jenna Wilson, who transitioned at the age of 16, received gender-affirming care during the pandemic.
“I was essentially tricked into signing documents for one of my older boys,” Musk remarked, referencing Wilson, who no longer uses his last name. He suggested that he felt pressured due to concerns about his child’s mental health during the chaotic time of COVID-19.
He articulated that medical procedures are being conducted on minors “who are far below the age of consent,” aligning with Peterson’s view that such practices are “incredibly evil” and advocating for imprisonment for those who support them. Additionally, Musk indicated that he was not adequately informed that puberty blockers are essentially sterilization drugs, although he noted that they do not directly impact fertility.
“I was tricked into doing this,” he said, lamenting the loss of his son and equating the term “deadnaming” with the notion that his son no longer exists.
These comments arose shortly after Musk announced that X and SpaceX would relocate to Texas, following California’s AB1955, which places restrictions on notifying parents when a child identifies as transgender. Musk has faced allegations of transphobia and anti-trans messaging in the past.
In 2022, Musk’s daughter sought a name change and new birth certificate, stating she no longer wishes to be associated with her biological father. Musk attributes their strained relationship to her liberal school environment, as detailed in Walter Isaacson’s biography, which suggests this dynamic has influenced Musk’s “anti-woke sentiments.”
In recent years, Musk has shifted from his previously centrist political stance to adopt more right-wing views on various issues, including diversity initiatives and immigration. Earlier this month, he endorsed the Republican presidential ticket featuring former president Donald Trump and Ohio Senator J.D. Vance, both of whom are known for their support of the fossil fuel industry and opposition to clean energy.
