Tesla CEO Elon Musk expressed strong opinions regarding his transgender daughter, Vivian Jenna Wilson, during a recent interview with psychologist and conservative commentator Jordan Peterson. Musk claimed that Wilson was “killed” after undergoing gender-affirming care, characterizing the procedures as “child mutilation and sterilization.” He shared that Wilson, who came out as transgender at age 16, received such care during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Musk stated that he felt misled into supporting Wilson’s transition, claiming he was unaware of the full implications at the time and expressed regret about having signed necessary documents, referencing concerns about her mental health amid the pandemic. He argued against the practices of providing gender-affirming care to minors who he believes are too young to give consent, describing them as “incredibly evil.” Musk further claimed that he was not informed that puberty blockers could be classified as sterilization drugs, although experts note that these treatments do not by themselves impact fertility.
“I was tricked into doing this,” Musk stated, lamenting the estrangement from his daughter and focusing on the concept of “deadnaming,” which refers to using the birth name of someone who has transitioned. He noted that such practices contribute to the emotional impact of losing a relationship with his child.
These remarks come shortly after Musk announced that his companies, including X and SpaceX, would relocate to Texas, a decision influenced by California’s AB1955 legislation, which sets guidelines concerning transgender youth in schools. Musk has faced accusations of transphobia and has been noted for his alignment with anti-trans messaging over the years.
In 2022, Wilson legally changed her name and requested a new birth certificate, stating in court documents that she does not wish to maintain any relation to her biological father. Walter Isaacson’s biography of Musk suggests that the strained relationship with his daughter has fueled his opposition to “woke” ideologies.
In recent times, Musk’s political views have shifted, moving from a center-left stance toward more right-wing positions on various issues, including diversity initiatives and immigration. He recently endorsed the Republican presidential ticket featuring former President Donald Trump and Ohio Senator J.D. Vance.
