Elon Musk Shocks with Bold Business Moves Away from California

Elon Musk plans to relocate his companies out of California.

In two posts on social media platform X on Tuesday, the billionaire announced that SpaceX’s headquarters will move from Hawthorne, California, to Starbase, Texas, a company town being developed in southern Texas. Additionally, the headquarters of X will move from San Francisco to Austin, Texas.

Musk stated that the SAFETY Act, a law signed by California Governor Gavin Newsom which prohibits school districts from requiring teachers to inform parents if a child wants to be identified by a different gender, was “the final straw.”

“Because of this law and the many others that preceded it, attacking both families and companies, SpaceX will now move its HQ from Hawthorne, California, to Starbase, Texas,” Musk posted on X.

In 2022, one of Musk’s children petitioned a California court to recognize her new name and gender, expressing a desire to no longer be related to her father. Musk has faced criticism for his remarks on X regarding gender identity issues.

Musk also mentioned in a follow-up post that he was frustrated by what he described as violent crime around the building where X is located in San Francisco.

Musk has shown a growing interest in Texas over the years. In February, SpaceX filed to move its business incorporation from Delaware to Texas after a Delaware state judge ruled against Musk’s 2018 Tesla pay package, siding with a shareholder who challenged it as excessive.

In 2021, Musk declared he would relocate Tesla’s headquarters from the Bay Area to Austin, Texas, and he himself moved to Texas in December 2020.

CNN has reached out to X, SpaceX, and Governor Newsom’s office for comment.
