Work on the Ellington jetty in Rakiraki, Ra, is nearing completion, with the Fiji Roads Authority (FRA) confirming that the facility is set to reopen to the public by November 22. Currently, approximately 90 percent of the overall work has been finished, with contractors engaged in final touches on the jetty.
The FRA had previously announced the closure of the Ellington jetty starting January 6, 2025, due to significant structural damage. This closure was necessary for comprehensive repairs, which included the construction of a concrete deck slab and backfilling work. The recent progress indicates that efforts to restore the jetty are on track, with the final stages focused on installing and completing the jetty deck.
Once operational, the jetty is expected to offer safer and more efficient access for commuters, transport operators, and local businesses traveling between Viti Levu and Vanua Levu. Furthermore, it will enhance connectivity to outer islands, which is crucial for the economic growth of the region.
In addition to the work at Ellington jetty, upgrades at other jetties throughout Fiji are also taking place. For instance, solar streetlights were recently installed at the Vunisea, Naluvea, and Kavala jetties in Kadavu, improving safety and visibility for the local community. These initiatives demonstrate Fiji’s commitment to sustainable energy solutions while enhancing the functionality of essential transport infrastructure.
The ongoing improvements reflect a proactive approach by the government to bolster maritime safety standards and ensure the long-term viability of critical transport hubs across the nation, ultimately benefiting local communities and supporting economic development.
