Meadow closures are returning to Rocky Mountain National Park to protect elk during the fall mating season. Beginning Monday, closures will be in effect from 5 p.m. to 10 a.m. and will cover meadow areas in Horseshoe Park, Upper Beaver Meadows, Moraine Park, Harbison Meadow and Holzwarth Meadow.
During these hours, all travel on foot or by horseback off established roads and trails is prohibited within the closed meadow areas. In addition, fishing locations along the Fall River, Thompson River and Colorado River that are reachable by passing through closed meadow areas will be closed to fishing from 5 p.m. to 7 a.m.
The park says the closures aim to prevent disturbance and harassment of elk while the herd engages in rutting behavior, and they are designed to enhance both wildlife safety and the enjoyment of visitors who come to view wildlife during the fall season. Visitors are encouraged to keep a respectful distance and observe elk without approaching them.
Park officials remind guests to stay at least 75 feet away when viewing wildlife and to refrain from calling elk or using spotlights or vehicle headlights to spot animals within Rocky Mountain National Park.
These meadow closures are a recurring seasonal measure intended to support healthy elk behavior and maintain a safe, enjoyable experience for park visitors. For those planning trips, checking current conditions ahead of time is advised.
