The introduction of electricity to Natuvusila District in Navosa Province has brought about significant excitement, yet it has also raised concerns regarding children’s exposure to social media. Local leaders are apprehensive about the potential digital risks that families face as they gain access to online platforms for the first time in their community.
Orisi Kubunadakai, the district representative, emphasized the growing worry surrounding children’s access to these platforms—a concern echoed across Fiji. He urged families to remain vigilant and actively supervise their children’s use of electronic devices, as the community adapts to this new technological landscape.
In anticipation of this shift, the district had already organized training sessions focusing on the responsible use of social media prior to the introduction of electricity. Kubunadakai noted, “We have gone through a training to give us a heads up on this,” highlighting the proactive approach taken by community leaders to address these challenges.
While the arrival of electricity is seen as a gateway to educational advancements and improved connectivity, Kubunadakai stressed the importance of ongoing oversight to ensure the safety of young people in the digital environment. The electrification project, which cost $5.4 million, is set to greatly benefit over 2,000 residents by providing power and light, thus enhancing their overall connectivity.
