OSHKOSH – Oncologist Anthony Phillips has secured the Republican nomination for the newly established State Senate District 18 by defeating Appleton businessman Blong Yang, as indicated by unofficial primary results from Tuesday.

Phillips will now face Kristin Alfiem, the sole Democratic candidate and a member of the Appleton City Council, in the general election scheduled for November 5. This newly redrawn district includes Appleton, Menasha, Neenah, and Oshkosh.

Incumbent Republican Senator Dan Feyen has been drawn out of this district and is now running for reelection in State Senate District 20.

In the State Assembly District 55, Republican Michael Schraa will not return, as incumbent Nate Gustafson, a Winnebago County Board Supervisor, has secured the Republican nomination.

In District 57, Republican Kevin Peterson, previously representing State Assembly District 40, won the nomination against real estate professional Duane Wilson and will face Ruth Caves, the unchallenged Democratic candidate.

Former Neenah Mayor Dean Kaufert and retired environmental health and safety manager Duane Shukoski both ran unchallenged for their respective Republican and Democratic nominations in District 53. Kaufert is making a political comeback after a two-year break due to redistricting.

In State Assembly District 54, incumbent Democratic Senator Lori Palmeri and Republican Tim Paterson, a Winnebago County Board Supervisor, also faced no challengers.

Republican Alex Dallman, a former representative of District 41, and educator Chris Gordon were unchallenged in District 39.

Multi-millionaire Eric Hovde, CEO of Sunwest Bank, will take on two-term Democratic Senator Tammy Baldwin after winning the Republican primary for U.S. Senate. Hovde surpassed Rejani Raveendran and Charles Barman in the Republican contest.

Former business owner Tony Wied has claimed the Republican nomination for the 8th Congressional District, aiming to fill the unexpired term of former Rep. Mike Gallagher. He will go up against Kristin Lyerly, the only Democratic candidate.

In the 6th U.S. Congressional District, incumbent Republican Glenn Grothman and Democratic challenger John Zarbano were also unopposed.

In Winnebago County, District Attorney Eric Sparr ran as an independent without opposition, while Republican incumbents Julie Barthels and Amber Hoppa faced no challengers for the positions of County Clerk and Treasurer, respectively.

In the Register of Deeds race, Town of Black Wolf clerk Susan Snyder won the Republican primary against former Oshkosh Mayor Paul Esslinger. Democrat Christopher G. Larson, the current Chief Deputy Register of Deeds, will face Snyder in the election.

Voters also rejected two proposed constitutional amendments aimed at granting the Legislature increased control over federal fund spending.
