Niraj Prasad, 49, has been remanded in custody following allegations that he stole a bank card and pension funds belonging to 86-year-old Malakai Kauwale. The case was heard at the Suva Magistrates Court, where the presiding judge noted Prasad’s prior convictions, which include two theft-related offenses and issues stemming from a previous bail that he did not adhere to.

Prasad faces a single charge of theft. Upon being informed of his right to legal representation, he chose to represent himself in this matter. The court has provided him until Monday, January 12th, to submit a formal bail application while he remains in custody. The case has been adjourned and will be revisited on that date.

This incident highlights ongoing concerns regarding the vulnerability of the elderly to financial crimes and the necessity for protective measures to be in place for senior citizens.
