Puerto Rico’s baseball team faces significant roster challenges as it prepares for the 2026 World Baseball Classic (WBC), missing eight key Major League Baseball players due to various reasons, including injury, insurance issues, and suspensions. The situation is disappointing for fans and the team alike, as Puerto Rico has a rich history of producing outstanding baseball talent.
Despite contemplating withdrawing from the tournament, Team Puerto Rico is set to compete in pool play starting Friday. The roster, however, lacks some notable stars. Among the missing players are Francisco Lindor, Carlos Correa, Javier Baez, Jose Berrios, Victor Caratini, Emilio Pagan, Alexis Diaz, and Enrique Hernandez.
Lindor and Correa, two of the most prominent figures in Puerto Rican baseball, were unable to secure insurance coverage required for participation in the WBC. Lindor’s situation was further complicated by a hamate bone fracture sustained earlier in the spring, which would have sidelined him regardless. Additionally, Baez is serving a suspension after testing positive for marijuana during the last tournament.
The absence of Berrios, Caratini, Pagan, and Diaz is also attributed to insurance complications, while Hernandez was forced to withdraw after undergoing elbow surgery.
This string of absences highlights the challenges facing Puerto Rico as it tries to field a competitive team in what promises to be a highly anticipated tournament. Nevertheless, the remaining players will aim to honor their country’s rich baseball legacy and strive for success on the international stage.
