The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has elevated its recall of eggs from Milo’s Poultry Farm to the most serious classification due to salmonella contamination. Classified as Class I, this recall indicates a significant risk that consuming the affected products could result in serious health consequences or even death, as stated by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Initially announced in early September 2024, the recall affects eggs sold in Wisconsin, Illinois, and Michigan after a report emerged of dozens of illnesses caused by the same strain of salmonella. The FDA’s voluntary recall includes all sizes and varieties of eggs produced by Milo’s Poultry Farms LLC, which have been connected to 65 reported illnesses across nine states.

Consumers are cautioned to clean and sanitize any surfaces or containers that may have come into contact with the recalled chicken eggs, which include wholesale products. For those who have purchased these eggs, the FDA advises immediate disposal.

The recalled eggs bear various brand names and encompass all carton sizes, including medium, large, extra-large, and jumbo, along with all egg types such as cage-free and organic, as indicated in the FDA alert issued on September 6. Specifically, the recall includes eggs from:

– Milo’s Poultry Farms
– Tony’s Fresh Market
– Happy Quackers Farm duck eggs
– M&E Family Farms eggs

As for the geographic scope of the recall, the affected eggs have been distributed in Wisconsin, Illinois, and Michigan, though illnesses reported in connection with this outbreak span nine states: California, Colorado, Iowa, Illinois, Michigan, Minnesota, Utah, Virginia, and Wisconsin.

Salmonellosis, the infection caused by salmonella bacteria, manifests symptoms akin to other foodborne illnesses, including diarrhea, stomach cramps, fever, nausea, vomiting, headache, chills, and, in some cases, blood in stool. Symptoms typically arise between eight to 72 hours post-exposure. While most healthy individuals recover within a few days without specialized care, the condition can become serious, leading to severe dehydration or potentially life-threatening complications, particularly in vulnerable populations such as infants, the elderly, pregnant individuals, and those with weakened immune systems.
