FOXBORO — Rookie wide receiver Efton Chism has quickly become a fan favorite in the Patriots’ locker room, and his teammates celebrated jubilantly following his first NFL touchdown during Sunday’s victory over the Jets. Chism’s contributions extend beyond his receiving abilities; due to veteran wide receiver Mack Hollins being placed on injured reserve with an abdominal injury, Chism stepped up to take on some of Hollins’ blocking responsibilities.
Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels emphasized the nuances involved in blocking assignments, stating, “People say just go in there and block the guy. Well, first of all, who am I blocking? When am I blocking ‘em? What shoulder am I blocking him on? Where’s the ball going? There’s a lot of little things that go into this.” He praised Chism for having a strong understanding and eagerness to learn, highlighting his reliable performance during the previous week’s game.
Wide receivers coach Todd Downing noted that although Chism is considerably smaller at 5-foot-10 and 198 pounds compared to Hollins at 6-foot-4 and 220 pounds, their work ethic and commitment to the team remain consistent. “I think the heart’s the same size,” Downing remarked, explaining that both players are dedicated to being great teammates, exhibiting their grit and determination even when not involved in the play.
Head coach Mike Vrabel acknowledged Chism’s knack for scoring, pointing out that he had been successful in practice throughout the season. In his first significant game action, Chism recorded two catches for 40 yards along with his touchdown.
With Hollins sidelined until at least the AFC Championship Game, Chism is poised to continue his role in the offense in the coming weeks. Downing reflected on Chism’s character and performance, saying, “I was really proud of Efton. He got an opportunity to put into action all the hard work that he’s put in throughout the year… he went in there with the same intentions and unselfishness, and I was really, really happy that he was rewarded with the touchdown.”
Chism, who went undrafted from Eastern Washington, earned a spot on the Patriots’ 53-man roster through his impressive performances during the spring and summer. His story is a testament to hard work and dedication, serving as an inspiration not only to his teammates but also to aspiring athletes who dream of making it to the professional level.
