Energy Fiji Limited (EFL) has responded to the issues highlighted in a recent Notice of Strike issued by the Construction, Energy & Timber Workers Union of Fiji (CETWUF), stating that these matters are already under consideration by the Arbitration Court and are distinct from ongoing defamation proceedings involving union officials.

In its statement, EFL clarified that the strike notice is part of Trade Dispute No. 4 of 2025, which is pending resolution in the Arbitration Court. The company emphasized that the concerns raised were also part of CETWUF’s Notice of Secret Ballot issued in August 2025, which is likewise subject to court proceedings.

EFL refuted claims made on the Fiji Times Official Facebook Page on January 16, 2026, alleging that it initiated legal action against the union shortly after the strike notice was filed. The company pointed out that this information was misleading. The legal action in question pertains to a defamation case lodged at the Lautoka High Court on December 24, 2025, against CETWUF and its General Secretary, John Paul. This case involves defamatory statements aimed at EFL’s Chief Executive Officer and General Manager of Human Resources, focusing solely on personal reputation and not on employment conditions or workplace issues.

EFL maintains that the defamation claims and the Notice of Strike are unrelated events. The company expressed its frustration over CETWUF’s failure to withdraw or apologize for the allegedly defamatory statements, which were reportedly disseminated via a CETWUF Viber group and an email dated May 14, 2025. As a result, EFL felt compelled to pursue legal action.

In conclusion, EFL stated its respect for the judicial process and expressed a commitment to await the court’s decisions on these matters. The company also urged cooperation from its employees during this turbulent time, highlighting the potential impact on electricity services should the situation escalate.
