Edmonton is preparing for an extensive construction season, with over 70 projects planned for this year. Among these initiatives are 11 neighbourhood renewals and significant developments like the West Valley Line Light Rail Transit (LRT).

Craig Walbaum, the acting deputy city manager of integrated infrastructure services, emphasized the city’s rapid population growth and the corresponding need to maintain and improve infrastructure. He noted, “Edmonton’s population is increasing quickly, and the city has a responsibility to serve residents and businesses by taking care of the infrastructure we have, while balancing the need for expansion and growth.”

The city’s ambitious construction plan is set against a projected budget of $7 billion for the 2023-2026 capital program. This estimate may increase due to tariffs and other unforeseen factors. Walbaum mentioned that while many projects have finalized costs, some contracts may require adjustments depending on how unforeseen circumstances impact progress.

Additionally, there is promising news regarding major parks in the city. The rehabilitation of Hawrelak Park is nearing completion, while the new Warehouse Park downtown is progressing on schedule, with both parks expected to open by early 2026.

These developments highlight Edmonton’s commitment to enhancing its infrastructure to accommodate its growing population and improve residents’ quality of life. The ongoing projects signal a positive shift toward a more accessible and vibrant city.
