Edman’s Setback: Can the Dodgers Star Bounce Back?

Tommy Edman’s challenging season continues, as the Dodgers utility player experienced a setback on Sunday, exacerbating a right ankle injury that has plagued him for weeks. While running the bases in the fifth inning against the Rays, Edman hit a single to center field but quickly felt discomfort and had to leave the game after consulting with trainer Thomas Albert.

This season, Edman has filled in at both second and third base, particularly with Max Muncy sidelined, but this strategy has been better for his ankle compared to playing in center field. Over the past 44 games, he has played primarily in the infield. However, it hasn’t been an easy journey; Edman missed 16 games in May due to right ankle inflammation and has also dealt with a toe fracture that sidelined him for three games in early July.

Currently, Edman is posting a .228 batting average with a .281 on-base percentage and a .396 slugging percentage. Since his return from the injured list in May, his performance has dipped, hitting only .214/.273/.323.

Following Edman’s exit on Sunday, Miguel Rojas took over as a pinch runner and stayed in the game at second base, indicating the team’s quick adjustment to Edman’s ongoing injury issues.

As the Dodgers move forward, the hope is that Edman can recover quickly and regain his form to contribute effectively to the team, reinforcing the importance of player health in a grueling season.
