Meanwhile, the Eden Prairie High School girls soccer team also celebrated a successful home opener, triumphing over Shakopee 3-2 on Saturday at Aerie Stadium, which boosted their record to 2-0-0.
Under the guidance of new head coach Jorge Oconitrillo, the Eagles managed to win the game despite challenges posed by the sun, heat, and humidity that influenced the match. The first half remained scoreless, but following halftime, the teams combined for five goals.
Shakopee struck first early in the second half, but Eden Prairie’s senior defender Gabriella Lainhart quickly leveled the score at 1-1. Senior forward Emily Langfield then put the Eagles ahead 2-1 with 25:11 left, but the Sabers equalized shortly after. Junior captain and defender Leah Gschwendtner secured the victory with a powerful 25-yard shot that found the net with 11:16 remaining.
Eden Prairie had previously registered a 1-0 win against Blaine in their season opener earlier in the week.
Next up, the girls will also play against Buffalo (2-0-0) at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 27.
