Marco Angulo, a promising talent in Ecuadorian football and a midfielder for FC Cincinnati, tragically passed away from injuries sustained in a car accident that claimed the life of his former youth teammate, Roberto Cabezas. The Ecuadorian Football Association confirmed his death on Tuesday, following a series of severe injuries he endured after the crash on October 7.
The 22-year-old was a passenger in a vehicle that collided with a metal barrier on the Rumiñahui highway, southeast of Quito. While the driver and Cabezas were pronounced dead at the scene, Angulo was left with critical head injuries and a lung contusion. After being placed in an artificial coma, he succumbed to his injuries late Monday night.
Angulo, who showcased his skills as a defensive midfielder, was loaned to L.D.U. Quito from MLS’s FC Cincinnati. His career included stints with the Ecuadorian Under-17 and Under-20 teams, culminating in his senior debut in November 2022 against Iraq. He was part of the Cincinnati squad that clinched the Supporters’ Shield in 2023, contributing with two assists in 24 matches before returning to LDU Quito.
In heartfelt statements, both FC Cincinnati and the Major League Soccer community expressed their profound sorrow over Angulo’s passing. FC Cincinnati described him as a joyful and kind individual who impacted everyone around him. The league extended condolences to his wife, son, family, and wide circle of friends and teammates.
This tragic event highlights the fragility of life and the deep connections formed in the sports community. While Angulo’s journey has ended abruptly, his legacy will inspire many young athletes. The outpouring of love and support from the soccer world serves as a testament to the impact he made in his short career.
The loss of such a vibrant young talent is indeed heart-wrenching, but his spirit and joy will continue to resonate within the hearts of those who knew him and the many lives he touched through his passion for soccer.
