The 2023 World Series has become a momentous occasion for the Toronto Blue Jays, marking their first appearance in the championship series since they triumphed over the Philadelphia Phillies in 1993. In an unexpected turn of events, the Blue Jays launched their campaign with a phenomenal victory against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
This year’s matchup is particularly thrilling for many in Chippewa Valley, as it features two former players from the Eau Claire Express — Daulton Varsho and Alex Call— both of whom have made significant strides in their baseball careers. Varsho, currently a center fielder for the Blue Jays, has emerged as a key player in what is being hailed as one of the most impressive offensive innings in World Series history.
Craig Toycen, owner of the Eau Claire Express, highlighted Varsho’s connection to the team in a recent newsletter, sharing his pride over the fact that there is bound to be a World Series champion emerging from the Express this season. Varsho, who played for the Express in 2015 and 2016, earned two All-Star titles in the Northwoods League and is closely linked to the team through his family. His uncle, Dale Varsho, serves as a coach for the Express, while Daulton is the son of former Major Leaguer Gary Varsho. Interestingly, he was named after legendary player Darren Daulton, who was a member of the Phillies during their 1993 World Series run.
Drafted by the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2017, Varsho transitioned from catcher to center field—a rare feat that has proven fruitful; he recently claimed the American League Gold Glove Award, which honors the top center fielder in the league. His pivotal performances helped propel the Blue Jays into the World Series.
Alex Call joins Varsho on the grand stage this year, representing the Los Angeles Dodgers as an outfielder. Call, a native of New Richmond, also has his roots in the Eau Claire Express, having played with the team in 2013 and 2014.
This World Series has also generated excitement among Wisconsin baseball fans, especially after the Brewers faced a disappointing defeat against the Dodgers in the National League Championship Series earlier this month. The series promises to conclude with intense competition, as the final game is scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 1, at 7 PM.
As both former Express players make their mark on this historic stage, local fans can take pride in the profound journey of these athletes, who went from regional teams to competing for the highest honor in baseball. Fans of Daulton Varsho and Alex Call can keep track of their careers through their respective MLB profiles and continue to support the Eau Claire Express.
