The Marist Hockey Eastgate Memorial Tournament, sponsored by Temo Consulting, kicked off at the National Hockey Centre in Suva, marking a triumphant return after a three-year hiatus. Celebrating its 30th anniversary, the tournament hosts 14 teams—10 men’s and four women’s—competing over three days.
President of the Marist Hockey Club, Paul Fraser, expressed his satisfaction with the tournament’s return after the pause necessitated by COVID-19 restrictions and essential renovations at the hockey center. This year’s event is especially noteworthy with the inclusion of two additional teams, underscoring the tournament’s enduring allure and its capacity to attract participants eager to display their skills.
Fraser acknowledged the logistical challenges of organizing such an event, particularly in managing the added costs and increased number of teams. However, the early efforts to manage an expanded roster demonstrate the commitment to maintaining the tournament’s high standards. “This event consistently brings out the best in all players,” Fraser said.
The tournament has generated enthusiasm among both local and international teams, drawing crowds eager to enjoy top-tier hockey. Fraser also extended thanks to Temo Consulting for their ongoing sponsorship, which has been instrumental in utilizing the National Hockey Centre for the past two years.
Concluding tomorrow, the tournament showcases exceptional talent in both men’s and women’s divisions. In the men’s category, Pool 1 hosts teams such as Marist White and Ventures, while Pool 2 includes Stingers I and Marist Lautoka. The women’s division features competitive teams including Marist and Ventures.
As an important fixture on the Fiji Hockey Federation calendar, the tournament’s diverse participation enriches its competitive atmosphere. The presence of overseas teams adds an element of excitement and challenge, reaffirming the event’s reputation as a cherished annual tradition.
The revival of the Marist Hockey Eastgate Memorial Tournament not only reinvigorates the competitive spirit of field hockey in the region but also builds community engagement and sportsmanship. This comeback offers hope for future editions that will continue to grow, inspire, and unite participants and fans alike.
