The East Side Union High School District in San Jose has reported a staggering rise in its unhoused student population, now nearing 1,000. At Independence High School, around 100 students have identified themselves as unhoused, frequently seeking assistance from Maggie Rodriguez, a parent community specialist. Rodriguez finds it difficult to articulate the challenges these students face, contrasting her own ability to provide for her family with the harsh realities confronting her students.

“The barriers they deal with are far beyond what we could truly comprehend,” stated Blasa Ozuna from the school district. “It is a nightmare for them. How can we expect them to focus on learning when they are hungry or self-conscious about their clothes?”

According to district officials, the current count shows 950 unhoused students in the district, with an alarming increase of approximately 50 each month. This figure does not account for those who may feel too ashamed or afraid to come forward about their living situation.

Despite these challenges, many students attend school for various reasons—be it education, meals, or simply the comfort of having Rodriguez to talk to. Rodriguez highlighted a common misconception that those who are unhoused lack ambition or are unclean, stating, “They are among the most resilient people I know.”

In response to these pressing needs, the school district is organizing a fundraiser aimed at raising funds for holiday gift baskets, which will include a $75 gift card. Ozuna emphasized that this card symbolizes more than just monetary assistance—it conveys to the students that they are seen, acknowledged, and cared for by their community.

This initiative not only supports the tangible needs of these students but also fosters a sense of dignity and recognition that is crucial during challenging times. It reflects the commitment of the East Side Union High School District to uplift and empower its students, reinforcing the importance of community support in addressing homelessness.

In summary, while the growing number of unhoused students poses significant challenges, the actions taken by the school district and community highlight resilience and hope. Each effort made to support these children fosters a brighter future for them and demonstrates the power of compassion.
