An earthquake measuring 5.7 on the Richter scale struck the Narsingdi district of Bangladesh on Friday morning, sending tremors felt as far as West Bengal in India, including the bustling city of Kolkata. The seismic activity occurred at approximately 10:08 AM, with the epicenter located 13 kilometers south-southwest of Narsingdi at a depth of 10 kilometers, as reported by India’s National Centre for Seismology.
Residents in Kolkata described the experience as intense, taking to social media to share their experiences. Many expressed their shock, with one user noting that their building “shook for 30 seconds.” Another resident remarked that the tremors were strong enough to rouse someone from sleep, highlighting the earthquake’s significant impact.
The tremors prompted a precautionary response from residents in Kolkata and surrounding districts, with many taking to the streets in an effort to ensure their safety. Fortunately, there have been no immediate reports of injuries or damage in the aftermath of the quake.
In addition to disturbances felt in Kolkata, the tremors were reported in various locations across northeastern India, including Dharmanagar in Tripura, Tura and Cherrapunjee in Meghalaya, and Aizawl in Mizoram. This earthquake follows another seismic event reported earlier today, where a magnitude 5.2 quake jolted Pakistan, although that event was situated at a much greater depth of 135 kilometers.
While the tremors caused alarm among residents, the lack of reported injuries or destruction provides a sense of relief in the wake of such natural events. Earthquakes can often lead to significant damage, and it’s fortunate that this instance passed without serious consequences. As communities recover from the initial shock, they can take comfort in the resilience displayed in the face of nature’s unpredictability.
