A strong earthquake struck off the coast of Japan’s Miyazaki Prefecture on Monday night at approximately 9:19 p.m. local time. The U.S. Geological Survey estimated the quake’s magnitude at 6.8, while the Japan Meteorological Agency reported an intensity of lower 5 on its scale, which ranges from 0 to 7. The earthquake’s epicenter was located a few miles offshore at a depth of about 19 miles.

Following the quake, the Japanese weather agency issued a tsunami advisory for Miyazaki and Kochi prefectures, anticipating waves up to 1 meter in height. A small tsunami wave, measuring approximately 8 inches, was observed at various coasts and ports around 10 p.m. As a precaution, residents were warned to avoid coastal areas and waterways, and some areas in Kochi Prefecture were even advised to evacuate.

About an hour post-quake, officials indicated that they were still assessing the situation and any disruptions. Some train services were temporarily halted, although authorities have not reported any significant damage or abnormalities in radiation levels at nearby nuclear power plants.

As aftershocks may still occur, residents are urged to remain in safe places and to watch out for potential hazards such as broken glass or debris. While the quake caused alarm, the absence of major damage and the swift lifting of the tsunami advisory provide a reassuring note in the aftermath.

Overall, this event serves as a reminder of the region’s seismic activity, but with preparedness and caution, communities can effectively manage such natural occurrences.
