Eagles Training Camp: Hurts Shines and Struggles Amid Rising Stars

The Philadelphia Eagles held their sixth training camp practice today in preparation for the 2025 NFL season, lasting around 80 minutes at the NovaCare Complex. Here are the key observations from the practice.

Quarterback Jalen Hurts began the session strongly, executing a well-placed layered throw to wide receiver A.J. Brown and connecting with tight end Dallas Goedert, who made a rare drop on a curl route. Hurts demonstrated his quick reflexes by making a one-handed catch on a mishandled shotgun snap from Brett Toth. He also successfully delivered a dump-off to Saquon Barkley, showcasing his ability to navigate the ball over a tall offensive line. Additionally, Hurts hit receiver Jahan Dotson with an accurate crossing pass, allowing the receiver to gain extra yards after the catch. However, as practice continued, Hurts struggled with accuracy, overthrowing Dotson on multiple attempts and throwing his second interception of camp, caught by Eli Ricks, which raises concerns about his performance consistency, especially considering he had just one interception over 16 practices last summer. Towards the end, Hurts also faced a couple of sacks during situational drills.

In terms of injuries, several players did not practice today, including linebacker Zack Baun (back contusion), tight end E.J. Jenkins (hamstring), wide receiver Terrace Marshall Jr. (knee), safety Andrew Mukuba (shoulder), wide receiver DeVonta Smith (back tightness), and linebacker Nolan Smith (concussion). Baun and Smith have now missed two consecutive practices, while Jenkins’ injury is new, and Marshall Jr. sustained his on Tuesday. Limited participation was noted for linebacker Jihaad Campbell (shoulder), defensive tackle Jalen Carter (shoulder), running back AJ Dillon (back), and center Cam Jurgens (back). Notably, Campbell appeared to overcome his limitations during practice, and Carter engaged in team drills for the first time this summer.

The cornerback position battle heated up as Adoree’ Jackson and Kelee Ringo rotated with the first-team defense. Jackson has shown inconsistency, often trailing receivers, while Ringo has exhibited potential, breaking up passes and demonstrating good route reading despite allowing some receptions.

Linebacker Jihaad Campbell showed his physical style of play while practicing as an edge rusher, and Smael Mondon Jr. shone by disrupting rushing attempts throughout the day. The defensive pressure also marked a notable performance by Jordan Davis against Hurts.

Eli Ricks appeared to be having a solid camp, contributing to the defensive effort with a pass breakup and an interception of Hurts, and he explored nickel cornerback duties late in practice. Meanwhile, rookie Johnny Wilson has faced challenges in making catches, despite opportunities to demonstrate his skills.

Tanner McKee also made an impression with accurate throws, including a completion to undrafted rookie Darius Cooper, showcasing potential under pressure and a promising connection with tight end Cameron Latu. A highlight moment came from rookie running back ShunDerrick Powell, who made an impressive cut during a run, earning praise from Saquon Barkley.

The Eagles will continue their training efforts, with the next practice scheduled for Friday morning at 10:00 AM.

This training camp session provided a good blend of highlights and areas for improvement, suggesting the Eagles are honing their skills ahead of the upcoming season. With young talent stepping up and the team focusing on individual performances, there’s an optimistic outlook for the Philadelphia Eagles as they proceed through the training camp.
