The Philadelphia Eagles are actively pursuing candidates for their offensive coordinator position and have recently interviewed Sam Mannion, the quarterbacks coach for the Green Bay Packers. According to CBS Sports’ Matt Zenitz, Mannion previously conducted a virtual interview, but he is scheduled to meet the Eagles in person this week to further discuss the role.
Mannion, who was selected in the third round of the 2015 NFL Draft by the St. Louis Rams, has a unique journey in the NFL. He played as a quarterback, making three starts in 14 games before retiring after the 2023 season. Following his playing career, Mannion transitioned into coaching, joining the Packers’ coaching staff as an offensive assistant in 2024. His advancement to quarterbacks coach took place in 2025, replacing Tom Clements after his retirement.
One of the intriguing aspects of Mannion’s candidacy is his connections within the league. His previous work with Matt LaFleur in Green Bay links him to prominent offensive minds such as Kyle Shanahan and Sean McVay. Additionally, Mannion’s tenure with the Rams facilitated his connection to McVay, while his experience with the Minnesota Vikings provided him with insight from Kevin O’Connell.
During Mannion’s time as quarterbacks coach, Jordan Love notably recorded the second-best passer rating of his career, showcasing his potential as a mentor. Moreover, backup quarterback Malik Willis has exhibited improved performance under Mannion’s guidance compared to his time with the Tennessee Titans.
However, it is essential to consider the challenges that come with hiring Mannion, primarily his lack of play-calling experience and his relatively short coaching tenure. While opting for Mannion may pose risks due to these factors, the Eagles might find him a more appealing choice compared to other available candidates who may offer lower upside.
The search for an offensive coordinator continues, and Mannion’s in-person interview indicates the Eagles are casting a wide net in their quest for a strong leadership presence to guide their offense in the coming season.
